Hallym and NCU experts show the future of healthcare

Hallym University – Nagoya City University International Joint Symposium 2019 was successfully held at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital on November 28, 2019. The symposium aimed at promoting academic collaboration between Nagoya City University and Hallym University by sharing expert knowledge and clinical experiences of professors of both institutions. The symposium attracted nearly 110 participants, including students, scholars and researchers from the field of Biochemistry, Molecular Toxicology, Occupational and Environmental Health, Nephro-urology, Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Molecular Physiology, Nursing Administration and Management, Physiology, and Material Science for Medicine and Pharmaceutics.


Delegation from Nagoya City University was led by Dean Makoto Michikawa and Vice Dean Masumi Suzui, who greatly contributed to strengthening the collaborative ties between Hallym and NCU.



Distinguished scholars from Nagoya City University including Professor Makoto Michikawa of Biochemistry, Associate Professor Yuki Ito of Occupational and Environmental Health, Assistant Professor Kazumi Taguchi of Nephro-Urology, Assistant Professor Noriaki Takase of Ophthalmology and Visual Science in NCU Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Nao Hosoda of Biological Chemistry in NCU Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Associate Professor Mitsuharu Okutsu of Molecular Physiology in NCU Graduate School of Natural Sciences, Associate Professor Kanae Momino of Nursing Administration and Management, and Assistant Professor Eriko Shirokawa of Nursing Management in NCU Graduate School of Nursing presented their research outcomes and shared their experiences on the topic.


Experts in Hallym University, including Professor Sang Won Suh of Physiology, Professor Jae-Bong Park of Biochemistry, Associate Professor Kyoung Sook Jeong of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, Associate Professor Woo Jin Bang of Urology, Assistant Professor Chang Ki Yoon of Ophthalmology in Hallym University College of Medicine, Assistant Professor Kyung Won Kim of Material Science for Medicine and Pharmaceutics in Convergence Program, Dean Dong-Soo Shin of Gerontological Nursing, and Professor Chanyeong Kwak of Clinical Professional Nursing & Health Policy in Hallym University School of Nursing participated as speakers to give lectures on systemic inflammatory diseases in their own medical fields.


Prominent medical specialists of Hallym University such as Professor Kyung Ho Yu of Neurology, Professor In Won Park of Ophthalmology, Professor Jin Seon Cho of Urology, Dean Dong-Hyun Kim of Hallym Graduate School of Health Sciences, Director & Professor Dong-Chul Kang of Ilsong Institute of Life Science also joined the event as chairpersons to moderate each session.



The symposium was comprised of three sessions with 16 lectures. The first session covered “Zinc Transporter 3 Modulates Cell Proliferation and Neuronal Differentiation in the Adult Hippocampus,” “Flotillin Is a Novel Diagnostic Blood Marker of Alzheimer’s Disease,” “Neurodegeneration process in Retinitis Pigmentosa,” “Evaluation of the Foveal Avascular Zone of Diabetic Retinopathy by Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography,” “Genetic Screen to Identify Regulators of Axon Regeneration in C. Elegans,” and “Muscle Contractile Activity-Mediated Regulation of Antioxidant Enzymes in Oxidative Muscle Requires p62 Phosphorylation-Induced Nrf2 Activation.”


After lunch, the second session began with presentations on ”Androgen Deprivation Therapy and the Risk of Dementia in Prostate Cancer Patients - A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study,” “Fatty Acid Binding Protein 4 Is an Essential Molecule for the Development of Kidney Stones: A New Understanding of Why Obesity and Nephrolithiasis Go Hand in Hand,” “Heavy metal changes in mother and cord in MOCEH and Ko-CHENS,” and “Exposure Assessment of Organophosphate Pesticides in Young Children Using Disposable Diapers.”


The last session dealt with the topics as “Insulin Induces Phosphorylation of Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Through RhoA Activation in HepG2 Cell,” “Ubiquitin Hydrolase USP10 Regulates Global mRNA poly(A) Tail Shortening Under Energy Stress,” “Why Do Older Adults Revisit Emergency Room? - Thoughts for Future,” “Fear of Cancer Recurrence and Problem-Solving Skills in Women with Breast Cancer,” “Enhancing Multidisciplinary Collaboration through Nursing Leadership,” and “Is There a Shortage of Home-Visit Nursing in Aichi? A Regional Perspective.”


Overall, all participants spent meaningful time there, sharing the latest discoveries in different fields of health care. The specific programs of the symposium including topics and speakers are as follows:
