2019 Hallym-Nagasaki International Symposium was successfully held at the Poster Hall, Hallym University, on September 2, 2019. The symposium aimed at promoting academic collaboration between Nagasaki University and Hallym University by sharing expert knowledge and clinical experiences of professors of both institutions. The symposium attracted nearly 80 participants, including graduate students in medical school and scholars and researchers in the field of dermatology, surgical oncology, pulmonary medicine, and pathology.

The four-member delegation of Nagasaki University led by Dean Takeshi Nagayasu of Nagasaki University School of Medicine who also serves as Professor of Surgical Oncology included Professor Hiroyuki Murota of Dermatology, Professor Kazuya Ikematsu of Forensic Medicine and Assistant Professor Hironosuke Watanabe of Surgical Oncology. The counterparts from Hallym University consisted of Professor Sunghoon Park of Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine, Associate Professor Hye One Kim of Dermatology and Assistant Professor Sun-Ju Byeon of Pathology.

Dean Nagayasu is a new dean who took over the office in 2017 from former dean Professor Nozomu Mori. It was the first official visit of current dean of Nagasaki University School of Medicine to Hallym University in Chuncheon. The delegation met with President Choongsoo Kim of Hallym University to discuss the way of strengthening future collaboration between the two universities before the symposium, and had a tour to Hallym University School College of Medicine, Hallym Clinical and Translational Science Institute and Ilsong Memorial Library (Ilsong Memorial and Hall and Institute of Japanese Studies) after the symposium. The Nagasaki delegation was deeply impressed by the size, facilities and infrastructure of Hallym University.

The visit was followed by a tour to Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital, the fifth hospital of Hallym University Medical Center with cutting-edge medical equipment and ultra-modern facilities for patient care. Director Seong Ho Lee of Dongtan Hospital greeted the delegation with a warm heart, and showed around the hospital including hybrid operation room, cardiovascular intensive care unit and radiology department.

On the following day, the delegation also visited Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital, which is the flagship hospital of HUMC and also one of nation’s 43 tertiary hospitals. They looked around the regional emergency medical center which was designated by the government to take care of urgent patients in the southwestern part of Gyeonggi-do.

“We were truly impressed by Hallym University’s outstanding education and research facilities,” said Dean Nagayasu. “I hope Hallym and Nagasaki can advance themselves through active exchange and collaboration.” He added.
