Hallym and UCLA experts discuss issues on Present and Future of Lung Transplantation

The 5th HUMC-UCLA International Symposium on ‘Present and Future of Lung Transplantation’ was successfully held at Hallym Sacred Heart Hospital on April 20, 2019.


The symposium attracted nearly 110 participants, including medical specialists in the field related to lung transplantation in Korea and abroad.



Distinguished scholars from UCLA, including Dr. Abbas Ardehali and Dr. S. Samuel Weigt presented the research outcomes and shared their experiences on the topic. Dr. Joanna M. Schaenman and Jay A. Onga also delivered excellent presentations and dignified the meeting with their presence.


Transplantation experts in Korea, including Dr. Sung-Gyu Lee and Dr. Duck-Jong Han of Asan Medical Center, Dr. Jong-Chan Youn, Dr. Jae-Jin Lee, Dr. Sung Gyun Kim and Dr. Sunghoon Park of Hallym University, participated in the meeting as speakers to give lectures on organ transplantation. Prominent transplant specialists such as Dr. Dong Joon Kim and Dr. Kyung-Soon Hong of Hallym University, Dr. Pyo Won Park of Sungkyunkwan University, Dr. Yon Su Kim of Seoul National University, and Dr. Hyo Chae Paik of Yonsei University also joined the event as chairpersons to moderate each session.



The symposium was comprised of five sessions with 10 lectures. In the beginning, the first session began, which covered ‘Lung Transplantation: Global Perspective’, and ‘Patient Support: Planning, Discharge and Follow-up’.


After a short coffee break, the second session started in which participants discussed ‘Evolving Strategy in Donor Management and Procurement’ and ‘Updates in Surgical Techniques of Lung Transplantation’.


In the third session, speakers presented on ‘Updates in Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute Rejection’, and ‘ECMO and Lung Transplantation at Hallym University Medical Center.’


The fourth session was about post-transplant infections. Speakers presented on ‘Strategy for Prevention and Treatment of MDR Bacterial Pathogens’ and ‘Strategy for Prevention and Treatment of Fungal Infections’.


The final session dealt with advances in lung transplantation. Topics such as ‘Advances in Pediatric Lung Transplantation’, and ‘Ex-vivo Lung Perfusion and Artificial Lung’ were presented.
