Hallym and UCLA experts discuss issues on Strategic Initiatives in Healthcare: Putting the Patient First through Medical Simulation Training

Under the theme of ‘Strategic Initiatives in Healthcare: Putting the Patient First through Medical Simulation Training’, the 4th HUMC-UCLA Joint International Conference was successfully held at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital on March 31, 2018.


The symposium attracted nearly 100 participants, including 7 prominent speakers who joined the meeting to present their expert knowledge on medical simulation. In particular, the presence of Dr. Randolph Steadman and Dr. Yue Ming Huang of UCLA Simulation Center dignified the event.




Distinguished speakers including Dr. Kyeong Ryong Lee of Konkuk University and Dr. Young-Min Kim of the Catholic University of Korea as well as Dr. Sung Eun Kim, Dr. Man-Sup Lim, and Dr. Sung Gyun Kim of Hallym University shared their expertise on the topic.




The conference was comprised of three sessions with 8 lectures. The first session covered ‘Current Status of Medical Simulation in Korea’, ‘New Start of Medical Simulation in Hallym University Medical Center’, and ‘State of the Art in Simulation in the US.’


In the second session, speakers presented on ‘Curricular Innovations’, ‘Curricular Innovations: Experience of Hallym University College of Medicine’, and ‘Curricular Innovation: CUMC (Catholic University Medical College) and CMC (Catholic Medical Center) Experiences.’


After a short coffee break, the third session began with presentations on ‘The Future of Simulation,’ then moved on to ‘Medical Simulation Training Center in Asia-Pacific Region.’




On the following Monday and Tuesday, there was HUMC-UCLA Faculty Development Workshop. The workshop comprised of three parts: 1)Learning principles/cognitive errors, 2)Debriefing, 3)Curriculum Development.


The first day began with learning principles by discussing adult learning theory and application to teaching, recognizing common cognitive errors and biases, and strategizing on how to create a safe learning environment. Participants then went through debriefing part by reviewing different types of debriefing techniques and how to use them, practicing with trigger videos of simulations and discussing challenging debriefing situations. Finally, participants moved on to curriculum development where they reviewed six-step approach, created a simulation training curriculum, and discussed scenario writing.




On the second day, participants continued to go through debriefing part 2 and curriculum development part 2. By creating a virtual scenario and practicing to deal with certain situations, participants in the workshop had a chance to get some experience in handling difficult circumstances and in developing creative problem solving skills.
