Hallym University Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital

Hallym University Medical Center (HUMC) is hosting the 5th Hallym-Oulu International Symposium at Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital on April 25, 2017, in conjunction with University of Oulu.

Under the theme of "Metabolic Syndrome & Lifestyle Modification," the symposium will bring together the prominent speakers of Hallym University and the University of Oulu in the field of endocrinology and metabolism, cardiology, family medicine, information processing science, biochemistry, and nutrition to share the latest findings on metabolic diseases. The symposium will also cover lifestyle modification using information and communication technology including wearable device and big data system, as solutions for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome.

The cooperation between two institutions dates back to 2008, when Hallym signed an international affiliation agreement with University of Oulu to promote exchanges of professors and students, collaborative research and joint academic meetings.

Since then, the institutions have collaborated on a series of annual symposium, with this year being the fifth. There have been four previous annual symposiums so far, which addressed a wide array of medical issues including diabetes, oncology, neurology, molecular epidemiology, environmental engineering, and psychiatry.

University of Oulu, founded in 1958, is one of the largest universities in Finland. It is ranked in the Academic Ranking of World Universities as the second best university in Finland. The university has been holding an important place in science and medicine. It’s especially focusing on four areas of research, which are information technology, biosciences and health, cultural identity and interaction, and environment, natural resources and materials.
