Kangnam invites an Italian obstetrician to discuss preterm birth

Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital invited Dr. Gian Carlo Di Renzo in obstetrics and gynecology at the Santa Maria della Misericordia University Hospital in Italy on Nov. 27, 2014. Dr. Di Renzo lectured on “Preventing Preterm Birth; Cervical Length and Progesterone” with the presence of 60 medical staff at Michael Hall of the hospital.


Dr. Di Renzo is world’s renowned scholar in the field of premature birth. He has been closely working with Dr. Keun-Young Lee, professor of obstetrics and gynecology of Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital to find ways to prevent prematurity. During the lecture, the two experts from Korea and Italy discussed their own solutions and other doctors in obstetrics and gynecology also actively join the discussion.




According to the World Health Organization, 15 million babies are born prematurely every year and over 1 million babies lost their lives due to complications caused by premature birth. Globally, the frequency of premature birth is increasing and the United States has designated premature birth as UN Millennium Development Goals.


Dr. Lee has been widely recognized as an authority in the field of high risk pregnancy, cervical insufficiency and early preterm delivery. He’s the first surgeon who successfully performance cervical insufficiency surgery in Korea and his surgery success rate is 97.3 percent.
