[The Joongang Ilbo] PET Can Detect the Alzheimer's Disease 20 Years before Symptom Development

Hallym University Medical Center hosted the 5th Hallym-Uppsala International Symposium under the theme, “Advances in Imaging: From Basic to Clinical Practice” at the Hanmaeum Hall in Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital on September 19, 2012.


Professor Agneta Nordberg of clinical neuroscience at the Karolinska Institutet, professor You Mie Han of nuclear medicine and professor Jong Yull Yoon of family medicine at Hallym University Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital shared their opinions on the imaging methods using MRI, CT and PET in the detection of the Alzheimer's disease, which is one of neurodegenerative diseases, and the prospects for early detection and treatment of the disease.


Professor Nordberg introduced the study using C-11 DED PET which can detect the disease process 20 years before the symptom development. Professor Yoon and professor Han told the current state of the Alzheimer's disease in Korea and the importance of early detection of the disease in relation with the direct and indirect cost in treatment of Alzheimer’s disease patients.
