Hallym University Medical Center (HUMC) hosted its second scientific conference at the Hanmaeum Hall at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital on December 6, 2008. The event was attended by executives and medical staff of HUMC.
The annual conference, conducted in English, is to provide a platform to investigate latest trends and advancement in medical research and to enhance Hallym’s global competitiveness. "To survive in the era of fierce competition, we are asked to keep developing ourselves, and performing creative research activities," Dr. Hae-Ran Lee, HUMC President, stressed at the opening ceremony.
A total of 23 presentations in English by HUMC faculty members addressed a wide array of current medical trends and issues. The contestants were evaluated on the quality of their research papers and skills in presentation and communications. Prof. Sang-Ho Jo, Department of Cardiology, won the first prize for his thesis on "N-Acetylcysteine vs. Ascorbic Acid for Preventing Contrast-Induced Nephropathy in Patients With Renal Insufficiency Undergoing Coronary Angiography: NASPI study – A Prospective Randomized Controlled trial." The second prize was garnered by Prof. Woon-Geon Shin, Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Prof. Shin presented his thesis, "Can We Predict Isolation of Common Enteropathogen in Presumed Infectious Diarrhea?" Lastly, Prof. Young-Lan Seo, Department of Radiology and Prof. Hyo-Jeong Lee, Department of Otorhinolaryngology won the third prizes for their papers on "Columnar Cell Hyperplasis with Atypia at 9-Gauge Vacuum-Assisted Stereotactic Biosy: Correlation with Surgical Excisional Biopsy," and "Speech Experience Shapes Speechreading Network and Deafness Facilitates It," respectively.
At the closing ceremony, Dr. Byung-Chul Lee, Hallym director, noted, " As we all know, an English communication skill is a must to make HUMC evolve into a world-class medical facility. We also agree that conducting a conference in English makes us, non-native speakers, feel uncomfortable and awkward, but, I strongly believe such a challenge surely provided us with an excellent opportunity to try to overcome the language barrier, playing a crucial role in expediting globalization of our medical center."
